What is the actual prevalence of hepatitis C in Egypt? This question has no accurate answer. We at the NLI only have data on the prevalence on HCV infection among liver disease patients, and this does not apply to the general population. Our studies on blood donors in the Institute are biased by the fact that our donors are targeted donors who donate to their family members who are hospitalized with advanced liver disease and bleeding, and they are expected to have a higher prevalence than the general population. Studies on the general population can be found in publications by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and its epidemiology study centers and projects, many of which are in collaboration with the University of Maryland, USA. We advise interested researchers and students to review these publications in detail. This is a list of the publications cited in the Medline related to the prevalence of HCV in Egyptians (arranged according to publication date, with the most recent first). Caution is needed before generalizations can be made. After detailed analysis of all these publications, no accurate prevalence can be reached to be generalized to the general population in Egypt. However, we can only conclude that hepatitis C is a major health problem in Egypt.

ما مدى إنتشار الإصابة بفيروس "س" فى مصر؟ لا توجد إجابة محددة لهذا السؤال. البيانات والإحصاءات المتاحة لدينا فى معهد الكبد القومى تختص فقط بمعدل إنتشار المرض و الإصابة بين مرضى الكبد، ولا يمكن تعميم هذه البيانات على الأصحاء أو على المجتمع ككل. وحتى أبحاثنا على المتبرعين بالدم من الأصحاء لا يمكن تعميمها، وذلك لأن المتبرعين بالدم فى المعهد هم أقارب المرضى ،بالمستشفى الذين يعالجون من أمراض كبد متقدمة و نزف دوالى المرىء، وفى هؤلاء يكون معدل الإصابة أكبر منه فى العامة.
وتوجد بيانات عن الأصحاء وعن المجتمع ككل فى الأبحاث المنشورة لوزارة الصحة و السكان، ومراكز أبحاثها ومشروعاتها البحثية، التى تم كثير منها بالمشاركة مع جامعة ماريلاند بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. وننصح المهتمين بمعدل إنتشار المرض بين المواطنين فى مصر بمراجعة هذه الأبحاث بالتفصيل. وفيما يلى حصر للأبحاث المنشورة الموجودة فى ال Medline عن معدل إنتشار فيروس س بين المصريين (مرتبة حسب تاريخ النشر). وننصح بالتروى قبل تعميم أية نتائج. وبعد تحليل دقيق لكل هذه الدراسات، لا يمكننا الوصول لمعدل إنتشار يمكن تعميمه على المجتمع المصرى ككل. وكل ما يمكننا التوصل اليه هو أن فيروس س يمثل مشكلة صحية هامة فى مصر. |
